Save the Date: Utopia HSA’s Spring Fling

Something fun is coming to the neighborhood!

Join us for the Utopia HSA Spring Fling—an afternoon of good vibes, great neighbors, kids’ games, and light snacks.

📅 Sunday, April 19
🕓 4–6 PM
📍 Park at Ventura & La Playa

This free event is open to all residents and will also be promoted throughout the neighborhood. It’s a great opportunity to connect with neighbors—and to introduce non-members to the Utopia HSA and the patrols our membership helps support.

More members mean more patrol hours, so if you have neighbors who aren’t members yet, we encourage you to invite them along.

We appreciate your support and hope to see you there!

Utopia Annual General Meeting Recap & Message from Lt. Reyes

This email shares key highlights from our Feb. 1 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and a message from our new Utopia patrol leader, Lt. Mathew Reyes.

From the Utopia Board

Cold weather may have limited attendance at the AGM; in case you were unable to attend, key updates are summarized below.

Board
The membership approved the 2026 board. Long-time members Gale & Glenn Patron and Sean Reichert resigned after relocating out of the area, and new members Evan & Sarah Baker joined the board.

Financials
Treasurer Lucas Azar reported finances consistent with last year, with income aligned to expenses. Members who currently pay by check or credit card may contact the accountant to authorize automatic monthly credit-card payments.

Membership
Mat Dillon reported stable membership, with new residents offsetting departures. Members are encouraged to inform new neighbors about the association.

Technology
Sam Dobrow reviewed recent updates, including programming the patrol phone (used by Miami Police and Elite Security) to recognize UHSA member contacts. Members may log in on the website for secure directory access and should submit any email or phone updates there.

Community
Volunteers led by Mona Adams are planning a mid-April social event; details will follow by email.

Safety
Sgt. Perez and Jaime Lopera (Elite Security) reported that crime in the UHSA area remains very low—the lowest since 2017—primarily involving unlocked vehicles with key fobs left inside. Continued patrols and resident vigilance, including locking vehicles, remain essential to maintaining neighborhood safety.  As a side note, just after our AGM, there was a car theft within our boundaries.  The car had been left unlocked with a fob in it.  It has since been recovered; however, this illustrates that unlocked cars are an attraction, so please due your part and keep your cars locked.

From our patrol leadership Lt. Mathew Reyes:

Good afternoon Utopia Members,

For those of you that I have not had the luxury of meeting as of yet, my name is Mathew Reyes. I am a Lieutenant with the City of Miami Police Department. I have been on the department since December of 2007 and currently serve as the Unit Commander over our Special Victims Unit. I was recently tasked with taking on the responsibility of coordinating the extra duty police services for your association.  I myself have been working the patrol a little under a year at this point and enjoy every second of it. I currently work most Wednesday evenings. I wanted to apologize for missing your annual general meeting as I had a trip planned with my family and could not be there. I’m sure most of you recognized Sgt. Perez who formerly held the coordinator position. For all intents and purposes, you can consider myself and Sgt. Perez your “Co-Coordinators.” I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to patrol the neighborhood and ensure you that we are here for you.

I also understand that services like these represent a significant investment for the association and its residents. Because of that, you deserve professionalism, visibility, and quality service from every officer assigned to the detail. If at any time you feel that an officer is not meeting those expectations, or if you have any concerns, suggestions, or feedback, please do not hesitate to reach out to me thru Corinne Collins your board president. I take these matters seriously and will ensure they are addressed promptly and appropriately.

Our goal is to provide a strong, visible presence that helps keep your neighborhood safe and gives residents peace of mind. We appreciate the trust you place in us and look forward to continuing to serve the Utopia Association.

Thank you.
